【Course Objectives】

Students will further their understanding of the relationship between the meaning and structure of language by learning different ways of thinking about linguistics in terms of how language relates to meaning and perception, and the frameworks used to examine these themes within cognitive linguistics.

【Course Contents】

The course will review theories of language prior to the advent of modern linguistics and the foundations of modern linguistics prior to cognitive linguistics, and introduce linguistic problems related to meaning and perception. The instructor will provide commentary on the perspectives of reference points, prototypes and categorization as well as metaphor, metonymy and other expressive phenomena as the frameworks and major themes of cognitive linguistics in dealing with the problems related to meaning and perception.
