Needless to say, one of the most serious issues we need to consider today is the environmental crisis. What can the humanities do to address this crisis? This class will deepen this question with participants by traversing classic literary texts as well as the latest theories.
While reading the classic masterpiece Henry David Thoreau's Walden(1854), the founder of American environmental literature, the class will read alongside theoretical and literary texts to deepen our understanding of natural symbiosis and develop interdisciplinary ways of environmental humanities.

いま、最も真剣に考えなくてはならないことのひとつが、環境危機であることは言うまでもない。その危機に対して人文学は何ができるか。古典的な文学テクストから最新の理論までを渉猟することで、受講者の皆さんとこの問いを深めたい。

アメリカ環境文学の祖、ヘンリー・ソローの古典的名著『ウォールデン』（1854年）を読み進めながら、自然共生の理解を深めるための理論的、文学的テクストを併読し、学際的な思考方法を身につける。受講生によるハンドアウトを通じた発表、グループ・プレゼンを取り入れる。扱うテクストは日本語を主とするが、英文テクストも用いる。
