This course takes up relevant examples to grant students the opportunity to inculcate an in-depth understanding of the interchange and clash of different cultures and to appreciate the phenomenon of cultural fusion. Additionally, students will learn the various conceptual aspects of cultural transformation and will be encouraged to formulate their own ideas on the subject.
Many writers, ancient and modern, have crossed different languages and cultures as migrants, refugees and travellers. The number of such writers will continue to grow. In this class, we will focus on the texts of writers primarily associated with the French-speaking world, examining their interactions with various cultures, their perspectives on themselves and others, and the works they created.
Claudel moved constantly around the world as a diplomat and was French ambassador to Japan in the 1920s; in the 1900s, Kafu Nagai stayed in Lyon as a banker. About 100 years ago, staying in a foreign country had a very different meaning than today. By reading and interpreting the writings of a Frenchman and a Japanese man who related what they saw and felt in the other's country at that time, we will look at the origins of intercultural exchange.
In class, we will read the texts carefully, integrating discussion as much as possible and sharing our knowledge of the social and historical context of the texts. No specific knowledge of French is required for this course.

さまざまな文化の交流や衝突，あるいは融合といった現象を具体例に則して学び，説明することができる。文化の変容のあり方を多角的に理解し，自ら意見を述べることができる。

古今東西，移民，亡命者，旅行者など，複数の言語・文化を横断する書き手は少なくないし，今後もますます増えるだろう。この授業では主としてフランス語圏に関わりのある作家が残したテクストを取り上げ，彼らがどのように異文化に接し，その中で自己と他者を見つめ，作品を生み出してきたかを探る。
クローデルは外交官として世界各地を移動しつづけ，1920年代には駐日フランス大使も務めた。永井荷風は1900年代に銀行員としてリヨンに滞在した。異国に滞在するという経験が現在とはまったくちがった意味合いをもっていた約1世紀前のフランス人と日本人が互いの国で見たものや感じたことをつづったテクストの読解を通して，異文化交流の原点に立ち戻る。
授業では可能な限りディスカッションを取り入れ，テクストの背景となる社会や歴史についての知識も共有しながら丁寧に講読していく。 フランス語の知識はとくに必要としない。
