【Course Objectives】

This lecture aims to achieve the three points below:
1. To discuss in a broad sense, the phenomenon of ‘Development’ from a cultural anthropological perspective and understand the theoretical points of view surrounding development.
2. To acquire a real sense of how the so called less-developed areas of the world actually have considerable relevance to the normal life of the Japanese public.
3. To learn about building various relationships and concepts of intervention that do not stop with the compositional equation of Development being equal to Assistance.

【Course Contents】

In this lecture we will look at the phenomenon of ‘Development’ from various angles and through the concept of cultural anthropology. We will discuss how development is not limited to the system of developed countries providing assistance to less-developed areas, but instead includes a wide range of practices and meaningful associations. Specifically, we will cover Development via smaller subtopics, including economy, tourism, environment, emotion, and forms of intervention. Also, we will look at the situation using specific examples of development from Latin-America, Africa, Southeast Asia, etc. The second half of this lecture series will offer detailed explanation of issues relating to the rural Nikkei Community of Brazil from the perspectives of development and agriculture. This is an area that the course lecturer has been deeply involved in.
