【Course Objectives】

The goal of this seminar is for students to determine themes for Senior Research and Thesis by connecting their awareness of various issues to academic themes, and classes are conducted to help students master the fundamental elements (research methods and the like) required to make that determination.

【Course Contents】

In understanding human actions and utterances, what kind of influence do the intentions of the agent/utterer have? Do the intentions of the agent/utterer determine the meaning of the actions/utterances? In the case of dropping an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, for example, it is said that the intention of the person who ordered to drop the bomb was to ‘end the war quickly and effectively’. As the agent did not intend to cause massacre, should we conclude that the agent is not responsible for the deaths of over one hundred thousand civilians?

How we treat the agent’s intention affects our interpreting human actions (including verbal utterances) and understanding each other in everyday situations. It is closely related to philosophy of law and ethics, and it is also important for interpreting/understanding works of art. In this class, through reading Intention by G. E. M. Anscombe and analysing concepts such as actions, the intentions of the agent, knowledge of intentional actions, and responsibility, we consider various issues associated with human intentional actions."
