【Course Objectives】

By the end of the semster, students are expected to:
1) understand the basic concepts such as politics, state, government, democracy, power and freedom;
2) be equipped with paradigms of political science;
3) recognize themselves as stakeholders in politics;
4) trace the historical trajectory of democracy and envision themselves as agents for a greater participation and freedom.

【Course Contents】

The classes will be provided in a lecture format, but surveys and discussions through online learning system will be employed during the classes to make the lecture more interactive.

In this course, we trace the history of democracy and understand how people have struggled to win popular participation and freedom that we enjoy today. We also discuss the challenges facing the modern democracies. In these classes, students will be posed the following questions: is democracy the best form of government, and if so, why?

From sessions 4 to 10, we will learn about the basic concepts of political science such as 'politics', 'power', 'state', and 'strategic interaction', as well as lenses for explaining and understanding political phenomena. We will also think about why states are necessary and learn about the diverse forms of states that can be observed historically. Then, we will consider what mechanisms are necessary for states to work for the enhancement of citizens' welfare. Specifically, we will learn about elections, governments, administrations, and the policy process. In session 11, we will focus on different political cultures and values in various countries and regions, and learn how such differences affect political actions and, consequently, political systems.

Sessions 12 and 13 will serve as an introduction to international politics. We will explore what distinguishes domestic societies from international societies; and whether there is an international 'society' at all.

In the final session, we will once again consider the question, 'Is democracy an ideal form of government, and why?'"
