【Course Objectives】

The main objective of this class is to learn about the basic structure and content of Japanese competition-related laws and regulations, as well as to develop a practical perspective.

【Course Contents】

This course covers not only the Antimonopoly Act in Japan but also other related laws and regulations, and lectures on their basic structure and contents.
The basic concepts and important issues of the Antimonopoly Act will be lectured in an easy-to-understand manner by referring to actual cases.
In addition to the Antimonopoly Act, the lecture will also cover the Act on Prevention of Delay in Payment of Subcontract Proceeds, Etc. (so-called the Subcontract Act) and the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations (so-called the Unjustifiable Premiums Act), which are often handled in practice, as well as the Act on Improving Transparency and Fairness of Digital Platforms, which regulates platforms that have become an indispensable part of modern society.
In addition, we will have a joint lecture with Professor Toshiko Takenaka, who has taught patent law at the University of Washington in the State of Washington, U.S. for many years. This joint lecture will cover the relationship between patent law and antitrust law, which may seem unrelated at first glance, but are related. Also, a comparison of European competition law and Japanese competition law will be covered in the lecture.
In each of the lectures, we will introduce, from time to time, issues and cases that are frequently encountered in actual legal practice.
In this course, you will learn about competition law from a broad perspective, while acquiring the basics and developing a practical sense of the law.
