【Course Objectives】

The objectives of this course are to understand the rise of China in a dispassionate manner and think about how to respond based on the fundamental concepts of Asian politics.

【Course Contents】

The lectures will first start with an explanation from a political science angle of the concepts needed to understand Asian politics and continue by analyzing the phenomenon which is the rise of China. Next, we will conduct case studies of the peripheral responses to that phenomenon. The case studies will center on Hong Kong which stands at the forefront of the rise of China.
Asia is a diverse region, and each country has a significantly different political system, economic situation, culture, and values. The relationships between each of the countries are also complicated. Knowledge of Political Science is needed to calmly decipher that situation. During the first section, we will examine Political Science theories to understand Asia as a whole.
It is no exaggeration to say that the rise of China is currently the greatest matter of concern within Asian politics. In Japan, there are significant concerns regarding anti-Japanese sentiment in China and threats to national security. An emotional backlash against China is strengthening, but on the other hand the economic relationship with China is significantly expanding, and the importance of China to Japan is increasing. The second section will focus on applying and thinking about theories of Asian politics in order to properly understand China.
In this contradictory situation, Japan must think about how to get along with China. To answer this question, it is necessary to accurately understand the characteristics of politics in Asia including Japan and China. Moreover, this problem not only affects Japan but is common to various Asian countries which are located around China. Thinking about the way in which the surrounding countries are responding to the rise of China will likely prove useful for Japan as well. The third section will examine a case study about Hong Kong.
