【Course Objectives】

This lecture introduces the contents of some of the most important works on political theory and policy proposals written by thinkers from the early modern to Meiji periods, and examines the characteristics of their ideas and the historical background.

【Course Contents】

From the early modern period, political theories and policy proposals written by thinkers of various schools, including Confucianism, Kokugaku ("National Learning"), Kaitokudo school, and Mito school will be selected. From the Meiji period, political works that were read by general readers and that were strongly influenced by Western thought will be selected. First, the content of these works will be introduced, and then the background institutions, social conditions, and reactions of intellectuals will be analyzed. This lecture will also examine what these political ideas may suggest for contemporary politics.
