【Course Objectives】

By the end of the semester, students are expected to:

1) understand the characteristics of the international society;
2) recognize the challenges facing the international society today;
3) understand the paradigms of international politics;
4) explain the events of interantional politics based on the paradigms.

【Course Contents】

This course consists of three parts.

The first part traces the history of international relations, and learn how the sovereign state system was created. This will enable the students to understand the characteristics of international society. We will then address a question whether the international order is changing and, if it so, how.

In the second part, basic paradigms of international politics will be introduced. This will equip students with tools to explain and understand various phenomena in international politics.

Building on this, the third part will introduce case studies and theories on the contemporary challenges in the 21st century.

The classes will be conducted in a lecture format, but Canvas LMS's quiz and discussion features will be occasinally used to make the course more interactive.
