The main objective of this course is to provide students with an opportunity to improve their English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills by reading and discussing, in oral and written form, various legal materials. An ancillary objective of the course is for students to get a glimpse of what legal education and practice in the United States look like, and to become familiar with various types of legal texts.
The course will take students on a journey from life as a U.S. law school student through to that of a junior associate at a U.S. law firm. We will begin by examining legal texts that U.S. law school students might encounter, and as we progress through the semester, we will examine legal documents that junior associates might draft or review. Each week, I will provide an overview of the reading for that day’s seminar and then ask for students’ thoughts on the readings.

| Homework: From the third week, students will complete homework assignments. Assignments are due at least 24 hours prior to the seminar. As long as a student has completed each assignment on time, followed the instructions and made a good-faith effort, full credit will be given. If an assignment is received less than 24 hours before the seminar but by the time the seminar begins, 75% credit will be given. Assignments received after the seminar but within the day of the seminar will receive 50% credit. Assignments received later than the day of the seminar but prior to the end of the semester will receive 25% credit. All assignments must be received in order to receive credit for this seminar. Quizzes: From the third week, at the beginning of each seminar, students will take a quiz that will cover the information we discussed in prior seminars. The two lowest quiz scores will be dropped, and the remaining scores will be averaged. Participation: It is expected that this will be a small seminar. As such, students’ active participation will be required. Each student should speak multiple times during each seminar, but at a minimum four times. For unexcused absences, students will receive 0 for participation for that seminar. The final test will be an oral test taken toward the end of the semester. The final test will cover information we have discussed during the semester. The grade for the final test will be based on how well students know, and are able to communicate, the material. | ||

A suitable English language proficiency level is a minimum of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.
