【Course Objectives】

This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the key questions regarding the relationship between law and peace. The concepts of law and peace are broad and reflect the challenges, issues, and aspirations of society. Through critical thinking, students will analyze legal approaches to social issues and evaluate whether the law can be an effective means of promoting peace. The course focuses on the international aspects of law and peace, but there will also be discussions on how peace affects society and individuals.

The objectives of this course are to help students:
1) have a basic understanding of law and peace from an interdisciplinary view
2) develop skills to critically analyze key social and legal issues
3) think about peace and law from a global perspective

【Course Contents】

This course aims to help students gain a better understanding of peace-related concepts such as positive, negative, and cultural peace. The students will also analyze how these concepts relate to law and engage with theories on nonviolence. They will question how law and pacifism can work together. Additionally, the course will focus on whether and how states can go to war, and how the law applies once war breaks out. It is essential to note that the counter element of peace is violence, and as such, this course will deal with large-scale violence and violent behavior as breaches of peace and law.

Please note that sensitive topics such as war and violence will be discussed.

Everyone is welcome to take this course, regardless of their background or legal knowledge.
