【Course Objectives】

This course aims to deepen students’ understanding of constitutional law through intensive reading of comparative materials.

【Course Contents】

The U.S., Canada, and Japan confront several common constitutional issues like same-sex marriage, hate speech, and reapportionment. This course addresses one topic chosen from such issues based on the participants’ preferences. The main part of this course will be intensive reading of U.S. and Canadian cases concerning the selected topic. Prior to this, there will be a brief lecture on the basics of U.S. and Canadian Law. Of course, comments from the perspective of Japanese Law are always welcomed.
(Points to keep in mind when enrolling in this seminar)
・The course language is Japanese.
・As the selected cases will be read continuously, continuous attendance is a prerequisite. Absences due to unavoidable reasons such as illness will be considered, but the more absences you have, the more difficult it will be to keep up with the class.
・In this seminar, students will read English literature using the method of intensive reading, rather than the method of extensive reading. Students who want to improve their reading comprehension of English legal literature by strengthening their ability to understand English texts structurally are welcomed.
