【Course Objectives】

The goal of this course is to foster a comprehensive and analytical understanding of contemporary Japanese politics by studying English-language scholarly works in the field. Students will also develop critical reading skills necessary for interpreting advanced political science literature in English.

【Course Contents】

In this course, we will engage in an in-depth reading of "The Oxford Handbook of Japanese Politics," a recently published English-language text that addresses contemporary Japanese politics. This comprehensive overview covers various aspects of Japanese politics, consolidating key points from experts in Japanese political studies both domestically and internationally. The focus will primarily be on the first half of the text, which deals with Japan's domestic politics and political processes. Students are expected to gain an understanding of how researchers, both in Japan and abroad, perceive Japanese politics, thereby enhancing their multifaceted understanding of contemporary Japanese political dynamics. The course will be conducted through discussions based on resumes prepared by designated reporters in each session, facilitating an interactive and analytical learning environment.
The latter part of the text, which includes papers on Japan's foreign policy and international relations, is scheduled to be covered in the upcoming fall semester course 'Seminar (EX622)'.
