【Course Objectives】

The objective of this seminar is to read Tocqueville's Democracy in America, and to discuss not only the content of his work but also the point of view on our present democratic society. In addition, students develop their awareness of issues and opinions through individual research in order to improve their investigative and analytical abilities.

【Course Contents】

Alexis de Tocqueville and his friend Gustave de Beaumont visited the United States to study prison system, and discovered that America would be the future image of European countries. After his return to France, Tocqueville, considering the arrival of 'age of democracy' as inevitable, put into publication his penetrating insight and analysis of the possibilities and problems that democratic society would bring about. His two books entitled Democracy in America contains many important ideas, such as tyranny of majority, equality of conditions and individualism, in order to consider our present political society.
Besides reading the literature, students also give presentations based on individual research. In addition, students are scheduled to participate in a joint seminar with other universities and compete in an intercollegiate presentation contest (late December).
