【Course Contents】

This course aims to envision the future of Japan-Southeast Asia relations.

In the spring semester, we will learn about the history of Japan-Southeast Asia relations through the reading of foundational literatures. We will assess the records of bilateral and multilateral diplomacy with Southeast Asian countries, data on the movement of capital at both government and private levels, and public opinion survey data, and describe Japan-Southeast Asia relations in the 21st century. In doing so, students are expected to access materials both from Japanese and counterparts' sources. Students are to share their research output in the mid-term and term-end presentations.

Based on the outputs in the preceding semester, we will envision the future of Japan's relations with Southeast Asia in the autumn semester. In the first class, we will draw a conceptual map of the international relations surrounding Japan and identify several key variables to focus on. We then will discuss how Japan's ties with Southeast Asia is crucial. Groups will be formed based on areas of interest to give a mid-term and term-end presentations. Aside from these, students are assigned to write a report (4,000 letters) on the respective topic. In the final week of the course, we will jointly draw a comprehensive vision of Japan-Southeast Asia for the future.

Training sessions will also be given to enhance academic skills.
