【Course Objectives】

The objectives of this seminar are;
- to analyze the politics of environmental issues in view of the multifaceted relationships between the environment, human, and society
- to design a future direction on the basis of our analysis.

【Course Contents】

This course is designed to consider a fundamental question directing environmental politics. That question is 'What is the 'coexistence/harmony' between nature and human?' A document by the Ministry of the Environment states that "it is increasingly important to ensure the 'coexistence with nature' by ensuring the preservation of (Japan's) rich natural environment and maintaining connections between nature and people" (Nature Conservation Bureau, Ministry of the Environment, 2009). Then, what exactly does 'coexistence with nature' mean?
You have probably heard that 'the Japanese people have lived in harmony with nature since ancient times'. Many people seem to share the image of the Japanese as having lived in coexistence with rich nature. Is this really the case? If the Japanese have had such kind of common sense, why are they less concerned about the current crisis that global warming poses on nature and its creatures? It is possible that they are content just with this beautiful but superficial phrase of 'coexistence/harmony with nature' and not grasp at the reality.
Various materials are used in this course; policy documents, nature writing literatures, movies on environmental science, and so on. In addition, having the experience of real nature is important. These studies enable us to revise the concept of nature-human coexistence/harmony, then, provide us new perspectives on society, economy, and politics in the era of ‘Anthropocene’.
