【Course Objectives】

The objectives of this seminar are to learn the fundamental French words and sentence syntax in the field of social sciences by reading French and to develop the ability to reference literature written in French when writing a report or a graduation thesis. In addition, while expanding on the content of the text, students will deepen their understanding of the relationship between movies and copyright.

【Course Contents】

This seminar will examine various cases where the rights of the creator become a problem, particularly the field of movies within the arts, with the ultimate goal of reading French Copyright Law, which stipulates that works are "mental works" and newspaper articles about copyright (including issues such as personality rights, the differences between plagiarism and imitation, joint international productions). However, after considering the students' level of French language, students will read a comparatively simple textbook about movies while initially reading basic sentence structures (roughly equivalent to the elementary French grammar learned during the first year). The review will be conducted at a fast pace, so participants should make efforts to prepare in advance.
In addition to using visual materials as needed, the seminar plans to create many opportunities to become exposed to visual culture through movie festivals and participation in symposiums. The instructor hopes that this seminar will lead to an overall understanding of copyright which is not limited to France.
