【Course Objectives】

The objectives of this seminar are to examine the politics, culture, and social conditions of contemporary South Korean society and Japan-Korean relations to deepen the students’ understanding.

【Course Contents】

This seminar will use papers, documentaries, television programs, and other audiovisual course materials in Korean and Japanese to examine the history of Japan-Korea relations and the politics, culture, and social conditions of contemporary Northeast Asia, and to build peace in Northeast Asia.

In particular, this year we will focus on Japan-Korea exchanges and the history of civil solidarity. Then, we invite guest speakers who have been involved in related activities to give special lectures and set aside time for discussion.

Finally, students will analyze from their own perspective a matter of particular interest from among the topics covered in class to cultivate their critical abilities.

During each class session, a student will be placed in charge of the topic, and the other students will submit a review which is approximately the length of one sheet of A4 paper. A debate will be conducted based on those reviews.

This seminar may be taken even if you do not understand Korean. However, in order to deepen the discussion, the instructor would like to have students carefully check the newspapers and other sources of news on a regular basis.
