【Course Objectives】

The objective of this seminar is to have students spend four weeks during the summer term (August 3 to September 2) in Oxford, England to learn the fundamentals of Western classics and English law.

【Course Contents】

The core of the class will spend four weeks at Oxford University as part of a joint summer program with The University of Tokyo and Aoyama Gakuin University. During the first two weeks of the program, young faculty members from Oxford University will lecture to small groups of students about fundamental legal disciplines including contract law and tort law as well as Western Classics including the works of Homer and Western literature. In addition to studying the fundamental ways of thinking of English lawyers, students will engage in an intense intercultural experience by coming into contact with the traditions of Western society including England while thinking on their own about how they can confront Western European thought, which by all means is internationally influential today. During the latter two weeks of the program, students will take field trips to an English court and other locations while selecting their own topic to conduct individual research. Finally, students will be required to present their research results and submit a report.

Furthermore, please note that four to five advance learning sessions will be held during the spring semester, and one general class will be held during the fall semester.
* Students are required to attend a course guidance session held between 5.00pm and 6.30pm on 22 March.
* The cost (travel, lodging, program, and other fees) is expected to be around 900,000 yen, but it may fluctuate due to exchange rates and etc.
* This joint lecture is only held during a single academic year. Students who took the joint lecture during the 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 or 2023 academic years cannot take the joint lecture during this academic year.
* Because this is not an official Oxford University program, there will be no credit approval or completion certificates issued by Oxford university.
