【Course Objectives】

Students will learn the current knowledge methods, problem consciousness, and basic stance required in fieldwork-based area studies. The aim is to acquire an attitude of continually questioning the validity of understanding while confronting the changing relationship with the subject, rather than a method that subsumes the subject within existing academic knowledge.

【Course Contents】

A region is not a monolithic entity, but a constant struggle between various actors. While cross-boundaries and intermixing are becoming more apparent, there is also a marked tendency to engage in activities that anticipate the essence of the region. In fieldwork, we must confront the polyphonic and processual nature of the subject, examine its validity, including the foundations of our understanding, and continue to confront the subject.
We will rethink the (often fallible) understandings and explanations of local culture and history, including questioning the object prescriptions of academia and the prejudices of one's own culture, and consider the "knowledge in the field" that arises in exchange with the ever-changing existence. The case studies will focus on the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan, focusing on cultural events such as kinship, shamanism, indigenous peoples, and historical understanding.
