【Course Objectives】

The aim of this course is to provide students the basics of Japanese ethnology through the study of great authors from the past and today, whether they are Japanese ethnologists working on Japanese themes, Japanese ethnologists working on foreign themes or foreign ethnologists working on Japanese themes. The appropriate academic vocabulary will be taught in the process. Japanese concepts, the history of the discipline, and its methodology will be introduced.
This course is aimed at those who want to discover on serious bases - or upgrade their knowledge of - Japanese ethnology, ethnography, and anthropology.
(Nota bene: This is not an English conversation class).

【Course Contents】

This course is not an English class: it is a Japanese ethnology course taught in English, with reference to documents written in Japanese, French, and English. Lectures will be conducted in English by the professor. It will introduce funny customs and interesting people, and provide an academic frame and the core knowledge on the matter.
Each class, one or several authors will be introduced (most of the time in chronological order), along with their works and put in parallel in their respective context.
