【Course Objectives】

Students will understand memory as a social act and its connections with critical issues in intercultural communication.

【Course Contents】

Studies on memory as a social act started to increase especially from the late 1980s into the 1990s. In Japan, research on social memory has been conducted since the 2000s across various academic fields, including history, sociology, area studies, and media studies. Memory as a social act, closely related to history and identity, is an important concept for scrutinizing critical issues in intercultural communication, such as nationalism and racism. This course will first provide an overview of culture, communication, and critical issues in intercultural communication. After understanding memory as a social act, we will explore the relationship between remembering and forgetting and how memory as a social act is interconnected with narrative, identity, media, and history. Through group presentations, students in this course will investigate the cultural memory of Japan's colonial rule over Asian countries in Japanese popular culture.
