【Course Objectives】

This course aims to explore Seoul intellectually as a global city. This course will provide historical background, sociological and cultural/media studies knowledge, and perspectives on the research of the society and cultures of Seoul.

【Course Contents】

This course explores the background and current situation to observe Seoul's phenomena as a global city while visiting various places in Seoul. We will present theoretical frameworks to analyze social and cultural phenomena in Seoul. We will see a specific place in Seoul, take up the remarkable phenomena there, and introduce our research and analysis approach in each class. We will take up familiar places as tourist spots such as Seoul Square and Gwanghwamun Square, Seoul station, Bukchon, Jongno, Sinchon, Hongdae, Myeong-dong, Insadong, Itaewon, Dongdaemun, Yeouido, Daerim-dong, Kangnam and some other places and introduce sociological themes such as political culture and nationalism, tradition, popular culture, gentrification, foreign workers/immigrants, multiculturalization, social exclusion, poverty/disparity, gender, and cultural capital.
