【Course Objectives】

This course will focus on the popular arts of East Asia (theater, performing arts, shows, music, etc.). In this course we will take the entertainment market as an example to help students think about and understand the difference between "modernization" and"globalization".

【Course Contents】

As modernization of Japan tends to imitate “The West“, thus many things of Modernization in Japan are unrecognized, ignored or even forgotten due to the great distance between modernization of Japan and its target. However, as the influence of globalization have become stronger, these forgotten things are returning. These things include popular entertainment and popular theater which are called "recreation" in daily life. Popular types of performance are an entertainment, as well as a consumer products in life of ordinary people during early modern and modern times. In this course we will think about differences between early modern culture and modern culture, and differences between modernization and globalization through popular art forms.
