【Course Objectives】

Students will learn about specific cases where tourism and literature are closely related, and learn how to apply literary research methods to tourism research.

【Course Contents】

Approaches to the phenomenon of tourism from the humanities and social sciences have so far been conducted exclusively from the fields of geography, sociology, and cultural anthropology. However, there have been cases where literature has created new tourist attractions, and even today, when literature has lost its power, there are some cases where "pilgrimages" are still triggered by new developments in visual media, such as the "Sherlock Holmes" series. The purpose of this course is to have students consider the importance of subjective meanings and their verbalization in the tourism experience from the perspective of both literature-based tourism (simulated experience of a tourist attraction depicted in a literary work and exploration of the stage with one's own eyes) and tourism-based literature (understanding and enjoyment of the work through the experience of visiting the stage). Furthermore, empirical use of such meaning-making in guidebooks and travel writing will be introduced, and the applicability of literary studies applied to tourism will be discussed.
