【Course Objectives】

In this class, we will focus on the representative personalities who appear in the Tale of the Heike, and read related materials to understand each’s special characteristics. In doing so, other points of view and methods will be used to make detailed readings of Japan’s Classic Literature.

【Course Contents】

The Tale of the Heike is a representative work of Japan’s Middle Age literature originating in the 13th century, and read until the present day. Within the text, actual historical events and persons are featured and depicted. In this course, in each class one such person will be taken up, relevant readings will be completed, and the narration pertaining to people and society, as well as the characteristics of the tale will be focused on.
