【Course Objectives】

Films are made up of a variety of techniques. In this class, we will learn the basic techniques and knowledge to analyze films, using various films of the history. The aim is to develop the ability to “see” and “listen” in order to understand films more deeply.

【Course Contents】

We watch and enjoy movies for entertainment on a daily basis. We have impressions about the story of a movie, such as “interesting” or “boring,” and discuss it with someone else. However, the appeal of films is not only in its “story.” Films that entertain us are in fact based on the accumulation of various techniques. By improving our analytical skills, we will be able to enjoy not only the “story” but also the various expressions of the film. As we gain knowledge and experience, we will be able to “see” the various techniques and strategies that make a film what it is. These techniques and strategies have been cultivated over 120 years of history since the birth of cinema at the end of the 19th century. In this class, we will take up various films from the history, and learn the terms and knowledge to analyze films in detail. The class aims to develop the ability to “see” and “listen” in order to understand films more deeply.
