This lecture aimes to give an overview of the history of cross-cultural representation in modern Europe.
From the so-called discovery of the new world to the era of colonialism and imperialism, images of non-european others have been repeatedly drawn and discussed in various fields from philosophical thinking to literature, painting art and film. In this lecture, we will trace the transition of the image of others since the 18th century. In the second half of the class we will focus on the image of Japan in Europe. In addition, we will examine the image of others in Japan.

〈異文化の他者〉の表象という観点から、ヨーロッパ（特にドイツ）近代の思想文化、さらには日本を含めた世界の一体化の歴史的プロセスとその問題に対する理解を深める。
This lecture aimes to give an overview of the history of cross-cultural representation in modern Europe.
近世におけるいわゆる新世界の発見以来、それに続く植民地主義や帝国主義、20世紀の戦争の時代に至るまで、ヨーロッパにおいては、哲学的思索から文学や美術、映画など、さまざまな分野で、非西洋の〈異文化の他者〉の像が繰り返し描かれ議論とされてきた。本講義では、18世紀以降の他者イメージの変遷をたどり、他者像を通して見えてくるヨーロッパの自己像について議論していく。後半では特にヨーロッパにおける日本像にフォーカスするとともに、日本における他者像についても検討する。
