【Course Objectives】

This lecture aimes to give an overview of the history of cross-cultural representation in modern Europe.

【Course Contents】

From the so-called discovery of the new world to the era of colonialism and imperialism, images of non-european others have been repeatedly drawn and discussed in various fields from philosophical thinking to literature, painting art and film. In this lecture, we will trace the transition of the image of others since the 18th century.  In the second half of the class we will focus on the image of Japan in Europe. In addition, we will examine the image of others in Japan.
