With a focus on Virgin Mary and her image in art, students will learn the basics of Christian art, and will be able to interpret Christian iconography on their own. Students will understand relations between Biblical passages, Christian dogma, cultural or social contexts and works of art.
Christian artworks purposefully translate complex doctrine into a visual form easier for laypeople to understand. Carefully reading artworks reveals an intricate symbolism that guides the viewers’ minds to a higher and deeper spirituality. In this course, an in-depth examination of the structure, meaning, and function of the image of the Virgin Mary will be given, and students will regularly write essays on a specific piece of art.

キリスト教美術で重要な位置を占める聖母マリアについて、旧約・新約聖書を参照しながら主要な図像の類型や、その背景にある教義、思想、美術家の意図について理解し、代表的な作品の解釈ができることを目標とする。

キリスト教美術は、ラテン語を解しない無学者すなわち一般信徒の聖書と比喩されることが知られるように、難解・複雑な教義を視覚化することで受容されやすくし、視覚を通じて超越的な真理へと信徒の信仰心を導く意図を持って制作された。この講義では、数多くの作品が制作された聖母に焦点を当て、彼女をめぐる教義や信仰のあり方にも触れながら、主要作品について掘り下げて解釈を行っていく。
