【Course Objectives】

In this class, students will learn the basic knowledge for discussing “contemporary American cinema” through the practice of analyzing films. Through this perspective, the class aims to develop the ability to “see” and “listen” in order to understand films more deeply from a critical perspective, rather than simply consuming them as entertainment.

【Course Contents】

In this class, students will learn how to approach American cinema of recent decades from an academic perspective. In order to get a clear picture of the outline of the “contemporary American cinema,” students will first acquire knowledge of the history and format of “classical Hollywood cinema,” and then learn about the changes that have taken place since the late 1960s, known as the “New Hollywood” period. In addition, students will learn about the various changes that have taken place since the 1990s: the development of digital technology, including computer graphics; industrial changes, such as conglomeration and the rise of independent production companies; the introduction of political correctness, emphasizing racial and sexual minority rights; and changes in reception, such as DVD, cable television and Internet streaming.
