【Course Objectives】

- Students develop an understanding of the historical development of Japanese art.
- Students obtain skills in identifying artworks and techniques.
- Students learn to interpret the meanings of artworks by situating them into their contemporary cultural and social contexts.

【Course Contents】

This course explores Japanese art from prehistory to the modern era. The focus is on painting, sculpture, woodblock prints, ceramics, architecture, etc. The first part of the course focuses on premodern art and the second half on (early) modern art. What do artworks tell us about developments in Japanese culture and how can we analyze them to find out? This course introduces various approaches to describing artworks within their cultural context.
