【Course Objectives】

Our modern life is surrounded by various products that take advantage of the convenience of chemical substances, and chemical substances have become essential to our lives. On the other hand, among chemical substances, there are many which carry the danger of explosibility and inflammability, and which have a harmful impact on human health and living organisms in the environment. The safe handling of chemical substances is in the process of changing from management through legal regulations based on accident and environmental problems to management through risk assessment which takes into account hazardousness and toxicity as well as dietary intake. In this course, students will understand risk assessment of chemical substances and acquire the ability to judge comprehensively in various situations.

【Course Contents】

In this course, we will explain the legal regulations, dangers, and toxicity of chemical substances and furthermore broaden the discussion to risk assessment taking into account dietary intake and risk communication. The lecturer will lecture on the fact that the approach to risk is connected to a broad approach when making technical judgments regarding society. We will also touch upon how to find the information required to use chemical substances safely. We will also introduce international initiatives such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
