Chemistry, the science of understanding substances, has evolved together with the discovery or synthesis of various new substances. The goal is to reach a more advanced understanding of the impact of chemical substances on people's lives and society, and the relationship between issues that modern society faces and chemical substances.
Environmental problems caused by chemical substances are taken up as issues facing modern society, and the relationship between substances and society is considered from the viewpoint of natural sciences. In addition, we will learn about the connection between substances that chemistry has been targeting and their society from the perspective of "civilization and substances". We also touch on energy production from chemicals and nuclear power. We seek an interdisciplinary understanding that the strong bond among substances-people-society is one of the important factors that support modern society.

物質理解のサイエンスである化学は様々な新物質の発見あるいは合成とともに発展して来た。人々の生活や社会に化学物質がどのような影響を与えて来たのか，現代社会が直面する諸問題と化学物質との関わり合いについて，より発展的な理解に到達することを目標とする。

現代社会の直面する課題として，化学物質が原因となっている環境問題を取り上げ，物質と社会との関わり合いについて，自然科学の立場から考察を加える。また，化学が対象として来た物質とその社会とのつながりについて，「文明と物質」という観点から学習する。さらに，化学物質や原子力によるエネルギー生産についても触れる。物質-人間-社会の強い結びつきが現代社会を支える重要な要因の一つであることについて，学際的な理解を求める。
