【Course Objectives】

Students will develop a sense of language, insight, and imagination through reading literary works, and deepen their knowledge of literary works.
Students will be able to understand the characteristics of representative authors and works of American literature and explain them in their own words in light of their cultural, social, and historical backgrounds.

【Course Contents】

This course will focus on one short story or several poems in each class, and will lecture on the characteristics of each author and work. Relevant video materials will also be used. After a lecture on biography of the author and historic background for each work, the students will present issues concerning the works to gain understanding from diverse perspectives. A reaction paper (small report) is to be submitted at each class, and quizzes are also given to check students' comprehension of the lectures. A small review is to be written on the most interesting work at the end of the semester.
