【Course Objectives】

In this course, we attempt to deepen our understanding of secularization in Western modernity, especially in terms of Christian thought. Also, we will explore the theme of "post-secularity" (or "post-secularization") and gain a renewed perspective on the status of religion in contemporary society.

【Course Contents】

Following the discussion of Charles Taylor's A Secular Age (2007), we will reconsider the master narrative of secularization and other related concepts. In his book, Taylor challenges the popular historical understanding, which assumes that religious faith was irreversibly refuted by the development of rational thought and modern science. In reviewing the critical arguments that Taylor develops against this master narrative of secularization, we will learn how historical transformations in thoughts and practices of Christianity have given rise to today's "secular age."
