【Course Objectives】

In this course, students will learn about the connection between Christianity and the History of Western Music while intimating themselves with the various works that emerged from said connection.

【Course Contents】

Lectures. In this lecture, we will look at various pieces of music relating to Christianity from the Middle Ages to the 20th century in roughly chronological order. We will discuss the composers as well as the structure and contextual background of their work. Religious music aside, we will also introduce various secular works that incorporate components related to Christianity, as well as secular works whose publication announcements were related to the church calendar in some way. While proficiency in a musical instrument is not required, we will be using sheet music, including orchestral scores, every class as a means to analyze and explain each work, so the ability to read sheet music and a desire to learn are a necessity.
