【Course Objectives】

Although the influence of established religions seems on the surface to be waning in 21st century society, issues such as "religious extremism," "politics and religion," or "second-generation religion" indicate that questions of religion still drive society in unseen ways today. In this course, through the "Aum Shinrikyo Incident" (1995), which once shook Japanese society, we will consider what meaning religion has in modern society, and what religious faith should be like.

【Course Contents】

Through documentary films that directly cover the inside of Aum after the incident and Shoko Asahara's own writings, we will learn as much as possible about the teachings and practices of Aum Shinrikyō without prejudice. Then we will examines the process by which the followers joined Aum and committed heinous acts in absolute obedience to their guru. In this study, we will make use of the many published memoirs of Aum leaders and former believers, as well as the reports of court hearings. In addition, we will examine the various discussions of Aum that have been submitted on the social factors that attracted young people to religious groups such as Aum.
