【Course Objectives】

We will consider how the frameworks that constitute our perceptions define how we read, and the process by which objects become stereotyped. The goal is to understand the rhetoric that seeks to simplify and understand others through literature.

【Course Contents】

This lecture will mainly focus on postwar literary texts, and will deal with texts that were ``marginalized'' in the process of demarcating the boundaries with ``Japanese'' literature. The first half examines the power of the Okinawan language, which was positioned as a region within the nation-state, being positioned as a ``dialect''. In this context, we will be dealing with Okinawan literature that has confronted language and the very position of language. In the second half, by examining the conflict between self-expression and representation of others, we will examine how genre divisions are determined and how images of others and self become fixed. We will examine how Okinawa responds to the gaze and expectations placed on it by Japan, reverses itself, and solidifies itself. Therefore, we will read literary texts classified as movies and entertainment. It depicts a mode that is represented/represented but never fixed.
