Upon outlining the history of ideas that revolve around imagination, this course aims to serve as an opportunity for students to think about society’s various problems from the standpoint of imagination.
The subject of this course is imagination. Present day society can often be expressed figuratively by phrases like “We have no idea how things are going to turn out” or “Our path forward has been obstructed,” and it is often said that young people today don’t have any dreams. With that as the backdrop, it is easy to see why one would be able to think of the present as an age suffering from a distinct lack of imagination. What should we do in order to break through this “obstruction” in society and live a life filled with dreams? In this course, we will consider this question while paying particular attention to one of the human mind’s many abilities: imagination. Let’s think about imagination, which to be honest, is inseparably related to the humanities, together! Now, let us head to the world of imagination.

想像力をめぐる思想史の概観を得た上で、現代社会の諸問題を想像力の観点から考えることができる契機とする。

本講義の主題は、想像力である。現代社会は、“先が見えない”、“閉塞した”といった言葉で形容され、最近の若者は夢がないとも言われる。そのようなことを踏まえれば、想像力の視点から考えれば、現代は想像力不在の時代と考えることもできる。社会の閉塞性を打ち破るには、そして夢をもって生きていくためにはどうすればいいのだろうか。本講義では、そういった問いを、人間の心の能力の一つである想像力に注目して考えてみたい。実は人文学と切っても切れない関係にある想像力を一緒に考えましょう。さあimaginationの世界へ。
