【Course Objectives】

The goal of this course is to obtain basic knowledge of gender studies in order to think critically about social phenomena from the perspective of gender as well as human rights.

【Course Contents】

"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights" (Universal Declaration of Human Rights). However, women were excluded from the primal concept of human rights that emerged in the modern era, and the opposition of women to such situation resulted in the first wave of feminism in England.
In this lecture, we will begin with such background behind the emergence of feminism and the modern issues related to gender and human rights, which were revealed through its development and lasting today. The lecture will also cover the latest debates on human rights and gender issues in Japan and the international community, including gender gap index and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Gender equality is a crucial issue related to all SDGs to achieve. To make it realize, understanding and voice of citizens are very important. I hope this class will not only provide you an opportunity to learn about various contemporary and complex social issues from the perspective of gender and human rights, but also encourage you to think about what you can do as a citizen to contribute to the SDGs whose the slogan is "leave no one behind".
