【Course Objectives】

The course aims to learn the relationship between art and the history/philosophy of Christian church centering on 3rd to 6th century Rome, to gain deeper understanding of Christian art in its infancy.

【Course Contents】

Christian art was born within the scope of Roman art between late 2nd century and early 3rd century following the establishment of the religion itself. The course will review the history of the creation and development of Christian religion, and consider how the Christian art changed during its infancy. In particular, the class will cover catacomb, sarcophagus relief, early church buildings and decorations, also focusing on the Roman society and changes in Christian philosophy underlying the art.
