【Course Objectives】

Lern the relationship between Christianity and music in Western society and deepen your understanding of Western music.

【Course Contents】

From the Middle Ages to the present day, some form of music has been required in Western Christian societies, including churches. To many musicians, Christianity has also been a source of creation, and a large variety of musical works have been given rise to. In this course, we will historically trace the development of Christianity and music and consider their relationship. We will introduce the characteristics of music of each era through concrete music analysis, such as the background of the formation of musical works, the relationship between worship and theological content and musical expression and structure. Not only religious music, but also works related to Christianity, opera and instrumental music, etc. will be taken up to help deepen the understanding of Western music in general.
