【Course Objectives】

The purpose of this class is to study the spirit of Christianity through the reading of literary works. In other words, to learn what kind of religion Christianity is, what it emphasizes, and how it understands the world. In doing so, we will learn how Christianity has influenced and continues to influence, various things in the world (e.g., Europe, modern Japan, or our common sense today). Finally, by learning how Christian issues are represented and dealt with in literary works, students will deepen their understanding of literature and broaden their own perspectives.

【Course Contents】

Reading literary works (mainly novels), students will be given explanations of the Christian issues and backgrounds that are expressed in the works. Since Christianity is a religion that places particular emphasis on the inner life of the human heart and soul, and therefore Christian themes in (especially modern) literary works are often represented through the emotional dynamics of characters, we will focus on the inner life of the characters in the class, as well as the historical and religious context of Christianity.
