【Course Objectives】

It has long been said that in order to understand the modern world, one needs to have an understanding of religion. However, we only grasp religion in terms of actual phenomena, and just how much do we understand the various historical and scientific premises upon which these phenomena are based? Furthermore, Japan is a relatively special place from the standpoint of religious studies, as it would be accurate to say that we are generally unaware of our own religious tendencies. In 2024, there will be elections that may radically change the course of the world, as exemplified by the U.S. presidential election, and in the U.S., religion will continue to exert a major influence, as evidenced by the presence of evangelicals. Therefore, in this course, we will examine the workings of our perceptions, which govern religion and religious experiences. Furthermore, we will strive to attain a structural understanding of the roles that various religions play within society as organizations.

【Course Contents】

In this course, we will begin with a philosophical analysis of what it means to “believe” in something. We will continue with a historical and systematic analysis of the function of religion within society. In particular, we will shed light on the relationship between religion and state, which has received special attention in the field of religious studies in recent years. Furthermore, students will learn the special place of Japanese society within the field of religious studies, while deepening their understandings of the religious phenomena present within it. Finally, we will touch upon the concepts of new religion, irreligion, and secularity, reviewing the significance of religion in modern society.
