In this course, we will outline the history of Western music, teaching students the fundamental knowledge of the subject. We will deal with the time period from the Middle Ages to present times, considering what humans have sought from music, and what it has helped them discover.
The art of Western music, that is to say, the history of classical music, will be separated from the rest of the material as a matter of convenience. We will focus on learning the representative motifs of each era. Because the subject being studied is music, we will utilize audiovisual materials in class as much as possible. However, it is worth noting that the goal of this course is not to cultivate a sense for appreciating music.

西洋音楽の歴史を概観し、それについての基本的な知識を身に付けると共に、中世から現代に至るまで、人間が音楽に何を求め、見出してきたのかを考えていく。

西洋芸術音楽、いわゆるクラシック音楽の歴史を便宜上区分し、各々の時代を代表するテーマを中心に学ぶ。対象が音楽であるから、視聴覚資料を可能な限り利用するが、いわゆる音楽鑑賞が目的ではないことに留意。

西洋音楽通史という授業の性格上、作曲家名や固有の用語が、ある程度前提となるのは避けられない。授業中の説明に全てを期待するのではなく、未知のことは、各自、自発的に調べる習慣を身につけてもらいたい。また、対象とする音楽は時間芸術であるから、授業中の鑑賞には自ずと限界がある。授業時間外に、積極的に各種メディアを用いて補うことを強く期待する。尚、各回授業で使用するスライドは、後日Canvas LMSにアップする。復習、試験準備に役立てて欲しい。

西洋芸術音楽を対象とする授業であるが、特に専門的な知識や技能は必要としない。
