【Course Objectives】

In this course, students will learn what the field of aesthetics is, and what matters it deals with. Students will become aware of the fact that our understanding of beauty and art is a peculiar thing, restrained by various historical limitations. They will realize that there are various mysteries and paradoxes surrounding the words we use to describe art and experience in the arts. Furthermore, students will learn the fun in pondering philosophical issues using their own mind and debating those with opinions that differ from their own.

【Course Contents】

In this course, questions such as “What is art,” “What is the correct way of appreciating a work,” “What is art useful for,” and “How does one acquire a sense of creativity?” will be posed to the students. Students will contemplate these issues with each other as well as together with the writings by prominent scholars of the past. To put it differently, this course does not intend to boil down various methods of appreciating paintings and music and teach them to students. Rather, the goal of this course is to provide students with an opportunity to obtain some common knowledge regarding the arts and critically reevaluate their understanding while learning the pleasure of philosophical thinking. Both literature and audiovisual materials will be utilized during the lectures.
