【Course Objectives】

This course aims to help students acquire
- ability to read introductory academic books, and
- skills to form and express their own (not necessarily original) opinion integrating various views.

【Course Contents】

Nowadays in Japan, it is often said that religions, especially the monotheistic ones such as Judaism, Christianity and Islam, are self-righteous and exclusive, and can be a source of conflict. This course examines the validity of this popular view, mainly dealing with Judaism as well as its Bible (with only slight variation in the Christian Old Testament) and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
This course focuses on religions, not international relations. Therefore, although basic explanations on the background of the Palestinian conflict are given in the classes, the main subject is whether the Jewish Hebrew Bible/Christian Old Testament really asserts and justifies the privilege of the “chosen people of God” and their exclusive ownership of the “promised land.” The purpose of this course is not to propose any solution to the conflict.
