【Course Objectives】

Rikkyo University is a Christian school (mission school) whose predecessor was a private school for the study of the Bible and English. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the founding spirit of the school, this class will focus on the Bible as it was created in the Western medieval Christian world, and together we will consider the fascination of manuscript art of the time. Furthermore, students will acquire the skills and research attitude to spontaneously deepen their academic interests acquired in class.

【Course Contents】

The class will focus on a single manuscript every few sessions, explaining its history and artistic expression, and studying how the three elements of text, design and illustration brightened the biblical story and promoted people's understanding of it, including the social background of the time. Students will also have the opportunity to view facsimiles of medieval manuscripts in the university library to deepen their understanding of manuscripts as objects. In the second half of the course, each student will select a manuscript of his or her own choice, and deepen his or her knowledge by presenting and discussing their own research. The manuscripts to be discussed are subject to change.
