【Course Objectives】

In this course, students will explore the scene of interdisciplinary creativity, placing music at the center, through topics such as “Music and Video Art”, “The Five Senses in Creativity”, “AI and Music”, and “Architecture and Music” examining various art forms. Students will learn about music, art, and culture from an international point of view, and gain a new appreciation of sensitivities unique to Japanese culture, both traditional and modern. Discussions and presentations on these topics will sometimes be held in the classroom when students will be able to investigate various ways of expressing themselves to convey their ideas to others, which will help them to comprehend their field more extensively. It is desirable that students have deep interests in creation, such as music, video arts, architecture, visual arts, and literature, etc.

【Course Contents】

As a pianist and composer who has been active (mainly in the U.S. and Japan) releasing albums, working with film and visual art, and so on, the lecturer will convey the diverse aspects of creating music and inspire awareness of the richness of the imagination. Guest speaker sessions along with questions and answers will be facilitated for participants to experience the scene of creation from various points of view. There will also be live performances with guest performers, a flutist and a shakuhachi player, invited to the classroom during this semester to provide sessions with the aim of presenting conversational improvisation as a form of non-verbal communication. In addition, leading experts in their fields, such as TV producer, company founder, architect will also be invited to the classroom for interdisciplinary lectures as guest speakers (7 guest speaker sessions in total).
